How to use aromatherapy at home

Aromas of herbs, fruits and flowers – a healing power of harmless tools, which is necessary for us to maintain health, youth and beauty. Don’t be surprised – aromatherapy really helps to preserve beauty, regain lost strength and cure chronic diseases.

However, just like any kind of alternative medicine it requires compliance with certain conditions and rules. But you have nothing to lose anyway, because it’s interesting and enjoyable.

The main component of aromatherapy – essential oils. They are obtained from plants and fruits by extraction, squeezing, concentration or evaporation. The most valuable oils are extracted from flowers. For example, it takes at least one tonne of freshly picked petals to obtain 500 g of essential oil from such flowers as jasmine, roses or frangipani. Therefore, such oil can’t be cheap. It has thickish consistency and rather pungent smell.

You can use essential oils for a variety of purposes – tonic, relaxing, stimulating, calming, analgesic, facilitating breathing and those that help to relieve tension.

A few examples:

Headache, heaviness in the legs and fatigue – oil of rosemary, lemon, lime and thyme.

Insomnia – incense, carnation, lavender, peppermint and lemon balm.

Increased nervousness – valerian, basil, cypress, sandalwood.

The attack of bronchial asthma and cough – verbena, Chinese magnolia vine, geranium and tea tree.

Bad mood, depression – neroli, juniper, cinnamon, mint, rose or juniper.

Nervousness, anger – cinnamon, orange.

Lethargy – lemon, rosemary or peppermint.

Lack of focus – eucalyptus and basil.

Drowsiness, fatigue (especially at low pressure) – rosemary.

Colds – orange.


aromalampHow to apply the essential oils? You should not simply inhale the aroma from the vial, there will be no benefit. There are several types of real aromatherapy: steam bath, aroma bath, inhalation, diffuser, massotherapy, heating of the oil in aroma lamps and wearing the aroma pendants.

What can we do for ourselves from the list? Of course, we need help for massage. But in the rest, we can handle by ourselves.

Aroma (evaporators) – is the most popular thing about essential oils. These vessels are very easy to use. Fill the upper porcelain cup with water and drip a few drops of essential oil on its surface. Candle, located at the bottom, heats the water and the fragrance extends in the room for a long time. You need 3-4 drops of oil per 30 sq. meters of room.

Baths

Fill the bath with hot water and add 5-10 drops of essential oil of your choice. If you have sensitive skin, it is recommended to dilute the essential oil in the oil-basis: almond, apricot or peach. More details.

You’ll need a basin of hot water and 4-5 drops of peppermint oil, rosemary or thyme. This will help to relieve tired feet. If you add the lavender oil, it will act as a painkiller.

Bath for hands

If the skin on your hands became cracked and coarsened, before doing manicure, hold your hands in warm (not hot) water with 3-4 drops of patchouli oil or tea tree.

Compresses

Essential oils can also be used for sprains, bruises, headaches (put a compress on the forehead). Take a glass of warm water and add 5-10 drops of essential oil. Soak a clean cotton cloth (handkerchief), squeeze and put on the sore spot, cover with something and hold until cool.

Inhalation

Inhalation of the vapor is an excellent method of treatment of respiratory diseases, including the common cold. However, in this case it is better to consult a specialist, because this treatment is not for everyone. Add 6-12 drops of oil into a vessel of boiling water, cover with a towel and breathe deeply. It is also a great way to cleanse the skin.
